This past weekend, I completely moved my home office.
We have a beautiful room in our house with a bright bay window and lots of light, which went largely unused. A few weeks ago, however, I decided I’d change that by turning the space into my office. So all day on Saturday and Sunday, I hauled my desk, printers, furniture, and everything else down to the first floor and settled in.
It was a TON of work, but it also felt GREAT. You see, I took advantage of the situation and also spent time getting rid of all the excess stuff that had accumulated in my desk, file drawers, closet etc. Decluttering for the win!
As I arranged my office and got everything “just so,” I was also keenly aware of making the space as welcoming as possible. I’m in this room 8+ hours a day, after all. I might as well be comfortable!
So I set about creating an office space that promoted focus, comfort, and well-being. And you know what? I couldn’t be happier. I absolutely love the new area.
Inspired, I thought I share my five best tips to create the perfect home office space of your own.
Are you in? Great! Let’s do it!
Create a Healthy Office Space
1. Add A Little Greenery
It may seem like a minor addition, but indoor plants can really liven up your workspace. What’s more, adding greenery has proven to naturally reduce stress, boost your mood and focus, and even improve air quality. Opt for a low-maintenance plant or two, and start enjoying the benefits today!
2. Get Moving
Let’s challenge that, shall we?
Push yourself to stretch every hour or so. Take a walk when you’re making phone calls. You might even consider investing in a standing desk. This is the one that I have, and it has been a game changer in boosting my energy, improving my posture, and helping me power through my afternoon slump.
3. Choose The Right Temperature
I am incredibly temperature sensitive. When I’m too hot, I get sleepy, and when I’m too cold, I can’t concentrate. I’m a bit like Goldie-Locks in that regard.
Fortunately, my new office has fiberglass windows, which helps maintain a consistent temperature. In addition, I keep an electric throw blanket for when I’m extra chilly, and my ceiling fan is ready at the flip of a switch when the summer months hit.
4. Healthy Snacks and Hydration
When the munchies hit, as they always do, it’s easy to get tempted by the unhealthy snacks hanging out in your pantry. To avoid this, ensure that you’re stocked with plenty of nutritious and tasty options, like nuts, fruits, and vegetables. You should also make sure that you have plenty of water on hand throughout the day. Aim for at least two full bottles each day to keep hydrated.
5. Clear Out Any Clutter
Clutter is a subtle but powerful source of stress, which, if left unchecked, can lead to even more health issues. To prevent this, strive to clear out any excess clutter on a regular basis. Aim to clear off your desk at the end of each workday, and dedicate time for a good clutter clearing at least once per month to keep everything in check.
