Can you believe it? Thanksgiving is tomorrow! Hooray!
I absolutely love this time of year. As I mentioned in Monday’s post, the end of November through the beginning on January is such an important time for reflection, practicing gratitude, and spending time with those we love.
And it is also a time for giving back.
It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. We get lost in the whirl of Christmas shopping, parties, and holiday concerts. And before we know it, the season is over.
This year, however, let’s challenge ourselves to practice altruism. Whether you give of your time, your talents, or your financial support, no act is too small.
What’s more, by helping those who need it, you’re also bringing joy to your own life.
Happiness is a choice, and by taking deliberate steps to better the lives of others, you’re choosing that happiness.
Wondering what you can do? Not sure where to begin? Check out the suggestions below and start giving back today!
The world of charity work is vast, which means there are so many opportunities for you to use your gifts and give to those who need it. Take a minute to reflect on your talents and your passions. Then think about where you could put them to use, and get to work!
Are you crushing it with your administration skills? Reach out to a local nursing home and see if they would like some assistance. Maybe you enjoy cooking for others, and you want to volunteer at a local soup kitchen or deliver meals to those who are home-bound. Perhaps you’re a lover of animals, and you want to give your time to a local animal shelter. The options are endless, and the impact significant.
So invite a few friends, grab your spouse and/or your children, and volunteer. Make some special memories this holiday season while helping those in need.
Giving to others
There are phases in life when giving of our time is an incredible challenge. And that’s okay. Just because our schedule doesn’t allow for it, doesn’t mean we can’t improve someone’s life in a major way. Practicing altruism through donation is always a wonderful option.
There are so many foundations doing incredible work. Bill and Melinda Gates, for example, have set up a foundation that works around the world on medical advancements, education, nutrition, poverty, you name it. While you may not be working on the same scale as the Gates’s, you could absolutely do something similar.
So think about what is important to you, do a bit of research, and give back. You could even ask others to donate in your name in lieu of holiday gifts this year. Just think of the positive impact you could make!
Of course, you don’t necessarily have to give something financially, either. Women all over the world give something arguably more precious to their fellow females: a child. Many surrogate mothers fulfill the dreams of a couple unable to have children, and give quite possibly, the most precious gift a person could give.
So as we enter the season, take the message of giving to heart. Volunteer at an adult education center, read to kids at the library, give to your favorite charity, or help a family in need. Whatever excites you, just do it.
You’ll be bettering the lives of so many people, and the possibilities for making a difference are endless.
