I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that you did not simply “stumble upon” this blog post.
If you’re here, you want to know – once and for all – which natural deodorants actually work.
Well good news, my friend. That’s exactly what I’m here to share with you.
For the past 3-4 years, I’ve been on a quest to find the very best natural deodorant. I’m not going to lie, there has been a lot of trial and error on this journey. But fortunately, I’ve discovered some winners along the way.
Before we get to the results, however, let’s first talk about why you should consider wearing natural deodorant in the first place. (Already know that you want to make the switch? Jump to the list now!)
Why Should You Wear Natural Deodorant?
Believe it or not, my initial reason for switching from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant was not to live a “cleaner” lifestyle or to avoid putting potentially harmful chemicals like aluminum on my skin. Instead, it was to stop destroying all of my white and light colored shirts.
Yep, you know that awful yellow tint that develops in the armpits of your favorite white shirts? You can thank the aluminum used in antiperspirants for that.
While searching for a solution to those yellow stains, however, I discovered an even more important reason why I should switch to natural deodorant: those same chemicals that create the stains have potential links to things like Alzheimer’s Disease and breast cancer. Yikes…
Yes, I said potential. And no, science hasn’t proven there is a direct link. But being the hypochondriac that I am, I figure if I can find a natural product that doesn’t contain those ingredients and works just as well, then why not use it? #AmIRight?
Your body needs to sweat
Now, if you’ve never worn a natural deodorant before, you may have an adjustment period. Why?
Because now your armpits are going to sweat.
Remember, natural deodorant is not an antiperspirant. And that’s okay! Sweating is the natural way your body regulates your internal temperature. Let your body do its thing, and the deodorant will prevent any unpleasant odors along the way.
FYI: Making the transition to natural deodorant might be a slightly stinkier experience than you’d prefer, but I promise you, it’s worth it.
You see, your body is finding its new “norm.” As Courtney O’Conner reminds us, “as your body rids itself of toxins from traditional deodorant, you may find yourself a bit more smelly than normal. After a week or two (the detox phase depends on your current chemical buildup), this will minimize and disappear as your pits + sweat glands become more balanced.”
So yes, you may need to reapply the deodorant more than normal for the first few weeks, but don’t give up; stick it out a week or two, and you’ll be on your way to a healthier, cleaner, and less pit-stained life.
So what do you think? Are you ready to give natural deodorant a try? Excellent! Then keep reading to find my favorite natural deodorant brands below.
Pros: Seriously, I cannot praise Modere’s natural deodorant enough. It is unscented, gentle on your skin, and doesn’t leave marks on your clothing (black clothing fans, celebrate!)
Most important of all: it ACTUALLY WORKS.
This deodorant has passed the gym test, the work-outside-all-day-in-the-heat test, and the nervous presentation stress-sweat test. And let me tell you, once it passed the stress test, I knew I found a real winner.
Made with coriander, sage, eucalyptus, and aloe vera, this deodorant keeps you smelling fresh all day long.
The deodorant is a roll-on, which made me a bit hesitant at first. But once I gave it a try, and I realized it didn’t leave any residue on my clothing and it was gentle enough to apply after shaving, I was sold.
Cons: NADA, Nothing, Zip. This stuff is incredible.

Second Runner-Up: Arm and Hammer Naturals
Pros: Until I discovered Modere, the Unscented Arm and Hammer Naturals was my go-to deodorant. It is free of all the potentially harmful chemicals, it absorbs and fights odor, and it goes on clear. Yes please!
Potential Cons: The company advertises 24-hour protection; for me, it’s around 8-10 hours and less on “stress-sweat” days. It may last 24 hours for you, however; I can get pretty sweaty.
Additionally, while it claims to be unscented, this deodorant has a slightly citrus scent; it’s a refreshing smell, but if you’re looking for something entirely unscented, Modere is your better bet.
Finally, the product is powered by baking soda. While baking soda is great for absorbing both wetness and odor, it can also cause skin irritation for those with sensitive skin. When I first started using this product a few years ago, I noticed some redness, especially if I applied after shaving. This disappeared after a while, but if you suffer from sensitive skin, keep that in mind.
Pros: Schmidt’s Naturals is another popular natural deodorant with which I had success. Like the other two brands, it is free of any harmful chemicals and it is powered by natural plant and mineral derived ingredients.
Both types also did a nice job of keeping the odor under control. They lost the battle when it came to high-stress-sweat situations (job interviews, big talks etc.), but overall, they did quite well.
Cons: The one MAJOR drawback was that both scents left an oily residue on the armpits of my shirts, which I could never fully remove. When I contacted customer service, they suggested (very kindly – their customer service is incredible) that I was likely using too much product. Using less helped a little, but unfortunately, it was never residue-free and I had to get rid of several shirts.
Brands that did not work for me
I toyed with the idea of excluding this final category from the post. Deodorant is such a personal preference, and others have had success with these products. With that being said, if I can help someone save a few bucks and find the perfect natural deodorant quicker, then I think it’s worth it. So if one of the four natural deodorants below works for you, that’s fantastic! Unfortunately for me, they did not. Full stop. Several didn’t go on smoothly, others left residue on my shirts, and they all they quit after only a few hours.
Natural Deodorant Flops:
- Toms of Maine (any scent)
- Green Tidings
- Crystal mineral deodorant
