You sit down to work for the day, and you’re completely stoked to crush your to-do list.

But then, for one reason or another, you fall short (perhaps WAY short) of that goal.

If so, then consider these questions…

  • Do you ever find it intimidating to tackle your long list of tasks?
  • Do you ever get easily distracted?
  • Have you ever looked at the clock and not known where the day went or what you accomplished?

If so, you’re in good company.

But more importantly, it might be time to rethink your time management strategy. It’s time to start completing your tasks once and for all.

Let’s do this!

5 Foolproof Ways to Master Time Management Today

1. Use an accountability partner

I’ve talked about the power of an accountability partner when it comes to health and fitness goals, but did you know that an accountability partner is also great for work-related tasks?

It’s true!

You see, when you have someone to hold you accountable for completing your projects, they help keep you focused. Knowing you must check in with your partner at the end of each day or week, you feel motivated to demonstrate your progress.

All of a sudden, wasting time on Facebook sounds much less appealing!

Why? Because someone is counting on you.

You need to be on your A game.

What’s more, when you are accountability partners, you provide that same accountability for the other person. It’s a great way to keep each other moving forward, while also strengthening connections and building friendships. It’s a win-win!

2. Practice Single Tasking

Here’s the deal, science has repeatedly shown that multitasking is a myth. In reality, your brain simply exhausts itself by switching quickly from task to task, which forces you to refocus every few minutes.

When you work on just one project, however, you can put 100% of your energy and focus into that task. You can get “in the zone” and stay there, which allows you to plow through your to-do list with much greater efficiency.

3. Set a timer

I can’t tell you the number of people I’ve met who thrive on deadlines. When they are racing clock, their thoughts and motivation jump into overdrive.

If you are one of those people, then try setting the stopwatch on your phone or use a free timer online and get to work! (I use the Google timer.)

If you have a long list in front of you, try setting the timer for 30-60 minute intervals, and then give yourself short 5-10 minute breaks in between; this allows your brain to recharge and keeps you working strong throughout the day.

4. Make it a guessing game

Believe it or not, time management doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, it can be – dare I say it – fun!

How, you ask?

Try turning your next to-do list into a guessing game. Ask your co-worker, spouse, or your friends on Facebook, how many items they think you can check off your to-do list by the end of the day. Then, step up to the challenge and get to work!

I think you’ll be amazed at everything you accomplish.

5. Take breaks

As I alluded to above, in between your sections of intense focus and productivity, be sure to allow time for breaks. If you push yourself too hard, you will only end up feeling frustrated, which is the ultimate motivation squasher.

So, after you’ve enjoyed an hour or so of peak productivity, then step outside for some fresh air, listen to a bit of music, or snuggle with your dog. You’ll give your brain the break it needs to recharge, and you’ll come back to your to-do list with an even greater focus.
